DOOA Tropical River Sand – Natural River-Sand Substrate for Aquariums, Terrariums & Vivariums

Product Description:
DOOA Tropical River Sand is a premium natural sand substrate designed to recreate realistic riverbed and stream-bank environments in aquariums, terrariums, and paludariums. Harvested from natural river sources and free of coral or shell fragments, this substrate remains chemically inert — meaning it does not raise water hardness or alter pH.

The sand’s varied grain sizes and warm, natural coloration help build a naturalistic substrate that works especially well for planted aquariums, shrimp tanks, freshwater community setups, and formatted biotope or paludarium designs. Its slightly larger sand grains also offer good water circulation through the substrate, help reduce detritus buildup, and create a natural, textured look in both aquatic and semi-aquatic environments.

Package Details:

  • Net Weight: 2.5 kg per bag.

Key Features:

  • Inert & pH-neutral substrate — safe for freshwater fish, shrimp, snails, and live plants; won’t spike GH/KH.

  • Natural river-bed coloration & texture — warm earthy tones with subtle grain-size variation for realistic aquascapes.

  • Mixed grain sizes — good substrate porosity, stable flow (ideal for freshwater setups), and helps detritus sink or collect naturally.

  • Pre-rinsable and usable immediately — recommended to rinse before adding to avoid dust/clay residue.

  • Versatile Use: Suitable for aquariums, terrariums, paludariums, wet/dry bioactive setups, and natural-style aquascapes.

Usage & Care Instructions:

  • Rinse thoroughly under running water until water runs clear to remove any fine dust or sediment before adding to your tank.

  • Lay evenly across the bottom as substrate — 2.5 kg typically covers a small-to-medium aquarium depending on depth; for larger/taller tanks consider multiple bags.

  • Because the sand is inert and low in nutrients, consider supplementing with root tabs or nutrient layers if you plan to grow demanding aquatic plants.

  • Works well on its own in low-tech tanks, shrimp tanks, or as a top layer on richer soils in plant-heavy aquascapes.

Ideal For:

  • Natural-style planted aquariums and biotope setups

  • Shrimp / snail tanks and sensitive freshwater species

  • Paludariums, terrariums, and semi-aquatic enclosures

  • Hobbyists seeking a stable, pH-neutral, realistic riverbed base

      Expensive but beautiful

Well yes, it is quite expensive for sand. However, we aren't in this hobby to save money are we? It is a very beautiful substrate. It is definitely my favorite out of the many I've used. I've noticed it was more white in color than I expected.
